What is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial intelligence is the new technology that is beginning to dominate the world. In fact the Putin, the leader of Russia, famously stated that โ€œwhoever controls artificial intelligence will rule the worldโ€. Although we donโ€™t know if that statement of his is true, one thing we do know is that artificial intelligence is changing our day to day lives.

In my day to day life there are many examples of artificial intelligence but the examples that I want to focus on in this report of mine are digital assistants and the artificial intelligence that is in navigation application.

Digital Assistants

There are many digital assistants that help people accomplish their tasks in their daily lives. These include Microsoftโ€™s Cortana, Appleโ€™s Siri, Amazonโ€™s Alexa and the recent Google Now. These digital assistants are an example of artificial intelligence in our daily lives. Digital Assistants are incredibly useful in our day to day lives from helping us organise our schedules, planning our calendars, making quick searches to sending commands to other apps. Digital Assistants are becoming a big part of our lives.

One thing about digital assistants that I like is how available they are all the time. It is almost like having a round-the-clock helper. Whenever I need to call someone, check the weather or something else all I have to do is call out to Siri (which is a piece of artificial intelligence on my iPhone) and from there Siri will do whatever I need it to do. This is why I like digital assistance because of how available, useful and resourceful they are.

What I dislike about digital assistants is how difficult it might be sometimes to work with these digital assistants. For example, a lot of times I will call out to Siri and Siri just doesnโ€™t seem to process my voice. This is because of a difficulty of voice recognition. This has been a long-lasting issue with not just Siri but Cortana as well. Its frustrating because years have gone by and yet Siri struggles to grasp other accents or the different paces in which people speak. As a result, you often have to repeat yourself and try to sound as clear as possible. By then you would waste time so a lot people prefer not to waste their time calling out to Siri or Cortana.

Another important piece of artificial intelligence is found within technology that is centred around navigation and travel. Most people donโ€™t seem to know that whenever they are using google maps, apple maps, calling an uber or booking a flight ticket they are using artificial intelligence. There are lots of different applications that I can write about but in this report I will be focused on uber. The way it works is that google and apple (and other navigation services) interpret hundreds of thousands of data points that they gain to give you real-time traffic data. Whenever you are standing outside and you call an uber, the pricing and the car that is chosen for your travel is decided by artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence plays a key role in how you go from A โ€“ B in your travels.

What I like about uber is how smooth and beneficial it is. If your bus or train is ever cancelled you can easily order an uber which will transport you to your destination. The uber arrives right outside your house, it tells you when its arriving and shows the customer exactly where the uber is when it is on the way to pick up the customer and whilst the customer is being dropped off. You can give your uber driver a rating afterwards as well. The same concept applies for uber eats as well (which is a branch of the company) and this smooth efficient process is what I really like about uber.

What I dislike is how there can be confusion at times with the entire process. This is not so much the systems fault. This confusion arises when the customers and the drivers both use the uber app incorrectly. At times, drivers will accept a job without knowing and then cancel and vice versa. This mismanagement of the app leads to disrupted schedules and both parties being confused. Perhaps Uber could simply the user interface so that these mistakes by the users donโ€™t occur in the future.

Overall, digital assistants and google maps and apple maps are resourceful and useful pieces of artificial intelligence that are available to us today. They have many benefits and have helped humans progress. We now canโ€™t cope as efficiently without these pieces of technology. Artificial intelligence is going to become the senior most piece of technology used in the future. It will cover every aspect of our lives at some point in the future and it is true that they might not be fully developed at this moment with many flaws, but they are incredibly interesting.
