What is The Alchemist About?

The Alchemist Book Cover From Good Reads

The Alchemist is the magical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found. From his home in Spain he journeys to the markets of Tangiers and across the Egyptian desert to a fateful encounter with the alchemist. The story of the treasures Santiago finds along the way teaches us, as only a few stories have done, about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, learning to read the omens strewn along life’s path, and, above all, following our dreams.”

A magnificent book which opened my eyes up to the beauty of the eastern civilization as well as philosophy. I read this book at the age of 18 during the month of Ramadan in the year 2018. I enjoyed reading this book in the cool long nights of Ramadan after a long day of fasting under hot weather. I’ll never forget those special memories I had whilst reading this book. I really haven’t managed to find a book similar to this.

There are so many things that I liked about the book. The book had a mystical, eastern and magical vibe which greatly reflected those Ramadan nights of 2018 for me. Everything about the book was foreign to me in the most exotic way. To begin with, the main character is an Andalusian boy. Andalusia is a forgotten land (which I am writing a piece about). A land which greatly contributed to the western civilization that we know today. The fact that the main character was Andalusian was amazing to me.

Another thing which I greatly liked about the story was the interesting unpredictable journey which it put its readers through. The main character is on a magical journey and as his journey unfolds we as the readers sit back with suspense wondering what will happen next. This was a really enjoyable aspect of the book for me. Furthermore the deep lessons that the main character learns as he grows older are nuggets of wisdom that are universal. Every person who reads this book will benefit some way or another from the wisdom within this book.

Something which I wish was different was the length of the storyline itself. I hoped his journey would continue into his later adulthood years. I really wanted to see the main character return to his love, Fatima, so we could see his marriage life develop. Another thing which I disliked was the extreme alchemy which took place at the end. I felt like the main character performing unhuman feats was taking away from the story. I didn’t want to focus on him becoming nature itself but rather I wanted to focus on the wisdom and journey unfolding within the story.

Overall, this book is a unique book that I first heard of when I was a kid and a cozen of mine recommended it to me. I’m so happy that I read the book because it is truly a special book that I believe everyone should read once in their lives. The book was so great in my eyes that I purchased a hard copy and put it in my personal library at home. I assure you this book is a book that will make you feel sad upon completion. Sad because you have finished a book that you won’t find anything like again. For me this book is a straight 5/5 stars.
