For a long time now I have wanted to start the ‘How To Read’ series on my website. In fact, many blog posts ago (must have been 30 or so ago) I mentioned that I would begin this series but as time went on, I completely forgot about this project as I became completely absorbed in other projects and series like my history series for example. Today is a good day, however, because I am officially introducing my ‘How To Read’ series which will be an interesting series that really highlights and explains all the different ways to read a book.
The book will be leaning a lot on Mortimer J Adler’s very own ‘How To Read A Book’ (link to purchase the book will be at the bottom of the article) which really is a touchstone of the book. Adler’s book has been described as a key to understanding all other books. For me, it definitely sparked my interest in the different reading styles and applying them across the board. It also added petrol to the already existing flames which were my love of books. Thanks to reading Adler’s amazing book, I was able to develop my reading ability and consequently enjoy reading more books.
During the series I will write about every different reading style and go in depth about each of their explanations. From elementary reading, through systematic skimming and inspectional reading, to speed reading, you learn how to pigeonhole a book, X-ray it, extract the author’s message, criticize. You are taught the different reading techniques for reading practical books, imaginative literature, plays, poetry, history, science and mathematics, philosophy and social science. The name of this series will be called ‘The Art of Reading’ and I am very happy to be introducing this new series to all my patient followers. Thank you to everyone who is tuning in.
