What is the book about?
“Harry Potter’s life is miserable. His parents are dead and he’s stuck with his heartless relatives, who force him to live in a tiny closet under the stairs. But his fortune changes when he receives a letter that tells him the truth about himself: he’s a wizard. A mysterious visitor rescues him from his relatives and takes him to his new home, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.” – Goodreads
I first began reading this book as a 20 year old which is incredibly late compared to most of my friends. The Harry Potter book series is incredibly famous and it went on to create an entire film series as well. I was fully aware of its success and I had seen clips of the some of the films. So for me it was always like “I will get round to reading this book” at a later date. Finally I did in the later half of the 2020 year.
It was a very special book for me and I thoroughly enjoyed the entire book. Eventually, I went on to begin reading the book series. As I am writing this, I think I am on the fourth book. The film series, I completed. The book was special because of how unique it was. I liked how story followed the main characters to the point where it felt like the readers completely knew who the main characters were.
Furthermore, there was an element of mystery to the story. As the story unfolded, the chapters were beginning to hint at a very mystery. A mystery that I was going to wait out to discover the truth behind the mystery, The story was well written. I liked how Hogwarts had its own history with many many characters present.
What I disliked was what felt like the lack of originality of some parts of the storyline. Hogwarts was a school and sometimes felt like a typical UK secondary school. Furthermore there didn’t appear much mention of anything outside of the bubble of the main characters. I wanted to see a deep insight into some of the other characters from the other houses. Moreover, there didn’t appear to be much character depth when it came to the villains of this book series. I was someone who first read Game of Thrones as my first fantasy book and so I was used to carefully written “villains” who had their own complex outlook on life and this was something that Harry Potter didn’t have. The good people were good and the bad people were simply bad.
Overall, I really enjoyed the Harry Potter book and I feel like it took me on a wonderful adventure with a story that kept me at the edge of my seat. Harry Potter is a franchise that everyone has definitely heard about once in their lives and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s stone is a book that everyone should read once in their lives.
